MAVERICKS TOPPLE SOUTHWEST TEXAS, 50-47

Feb. 27, 2003

SAN MARCOS, Texas...The University of Texas at Arlington men's basketball team used a slow down tempo to pick up its first win in San Marcos since the 1993 season with a 50-47 victory over Southwest Texas Thursday night at Strahan Coliseum.

The victory moved the Mavs into sole possession of third place in the conference with a 10-7 SLC record. UTA is now just one win shy of tying the conference record of 11 wins set four times, most recently during the 2000-01 season. UTA also improved to 13-12 overall. The loss dropped SWT to 14-10 on the season, and 9-8 in the conference.

Both teams struggled from the field in the first half with the Mavericks shooting only 6-of-17 (.353) from the floor and the Bobcats shooting only 7-of-21 (.333) from the field. The two teams went into the locker room the same way they came out, all tied up 19-19. In the second half, the scoring picked up as the Mavericks opened up a 10-point lead with just over 11 minutes remaining in the game. SWT was able to tie the game up with just over two minutes to play before Josh Daniel hit a three-pointer to put ahead by three points. After a Derrick Obasohan field goal put UTA ahead by five points, Brad Brickens trimmed the lead back to one point on a four point play. Daniel and Keith Howell would knock down their free throws down the stretch as the Mavericks held on for the 50-47 victory.

Daniel was the only Maverick in double figures with 11 points. Brickens was the only Bobcat in double figures with 10 points.

The Mavericks return to action on Saturday afternoon, March 1, as they travel to San Antonio to take on the Roadrunners of Texas-San Antonio. Tip-off is set for 4 p.m. at the Convocation Center.
