ARLINGTON, Texas...On the second day of the Major League Baseball draft, the Milwaukee Brewers selected a pair of Texas-Arlington players as they selected Ricky Stover in the 29th round and followed that pick by taking Robby Deevers in the 30th round. The two players join Ryan Roberts, who was drafted in the 18th round by the Toronto Blue Jays, as Mavericks selected in this year's draft.
Stover, a left-handed pitcher from Rockwall, was taken with the 849th overall pick after posting a 6-1 record with a 4.32 ERA for the Mavericks last season. Stover was second on the team with 81.1 innings pitched and was tied for the team lead with two complete games, with one shutout. Stover's most impressive outing of the season came in a no decision in only his second start, Stover scattered six hits over eight scoreless innings against the then No. 2 ranked Rice Owls.
Deevers, a center fielder from Elgin, Okla., was taken with the 879th overall selection after completing his two year career at UTA. Deevers finished the season hitting .286 with nine home runs and 51 RBI. He led the team in stolen bases with 19 in 21 attempts. Deevers biggest asset was his strong throwing arm from the outfield where he recorded 12 outfield assists after recording five in his junior year. In the opening game of the season, Deevers broke open a tie game in the eighth inning with a three-run homer over the left field fence to defeat TCU. In a game against Centenary, Deevers belted out two home runs in the fourth inning to knock in five runs. He tied that five RBI performance with a home run and a triple, forcing the if necessary game of the SLC Tournament championship.
