ARLINGTON, Texas- ARLINGTON, Texas – The UT Arlington Mavericks evened their series with Tarleton State with a 6-3 victory Thursday afternoon at Clay Gould Ballpark.
UTA broke through in the fourth inning when
Caylon Dygert delivered an RBI groundout to score
Harold Laracuente and give the Mavericks a 1-0 lead.
The Mavericks added two runs in the fifth inning.
Austin Phillips walked and advanced into scoring position on a sacrifice bunt before
Clark Springs drove him home with a sacrifice fly. Laracuente followed with an RBI single to push the lead to 3-0.
UTA extended the advantage in the sixth inning on a pair of run-scoring knocks.
Xavier Melendez doubled to right field before Dygert plated him with an RBI triple. Springs added another sacrifice fly to make it 5-0.
Tarleton State (21-9, 1-1 WAC) broke through in the fifth inning on an RBI single and added two runs in the eighth, but the Mavericks answered with an insurance run in the bottom of the frame when
Preston Knott drove in Phillips on a fielder's choice.
Offensively, Dygert led the way with a triple and two RBIs while Melendez added a double and two stolen bases. Laracuente contributed an RBI single and drew a pair of walks. Springs recorded two RBIs despite not registering a hit, driving in runs on a pair of sacrifice flies.
Pitching Profile
- Senior left-hander Kyle Winkler earned the win for UTA, tossing 6.0 innings while allowing just one run on four hits with three strikeouts and four walks.
- Sophomore Hayes Melville recorded his third save of the season, working 1.1 scoreless innings to close out the contest.
