LADY MAVS WIN UGLY AGAINST MCNEESE STATE

Jan. 17, 2004

Box Score

ARLINGTON, Texas - On a day that featured nearly as many turnovers, 57, as points, 77, The University of Texas at Arlington had just enough offense to escape Texas Hall with a 47-30 victory over McNeese State on Saturday afternoon.

The Lady Mavs (9-7, 3-1 SLC) got all the offense they needed when they went on a 10-0 run over a 5:01 span and pushed its lead to 12-points just passed the midway point of the second half.

Tojjinay Thompson got the run started as she followed a missed shot and powered it back up. The two teams did not score another point over the next three minutes before Rola Ogunoye followed up her own missed shot. On the next possession, Terra Wallace knocked in a trifecta from the top of the key to push the lead to nine. UTA would close out the run with a free throw by Ogunoye and a pair from Wallace.

The Cowgirls (4-11, 2-2 SLC) finally put an end to their 5:49 scoring drought when Tara Abdul-Hadi connected on a pair of free throws.

MSU would trim the lead to six points with 6:42 left in the game before Sheena Johnson and Ogunoye pushed the lead back to double figures. After Ogunoye's second free throw, Johnson stole the inbounds pass and Krystal Buchanan found a wide open LaToya Lewis who calmly knocked down a three-pointer from the left wing to push the lead to 13 points.

UTA would push its lead to as many as 18 points as Wallace beat the shot clock with a pull-up jumper from just inside the free throw line.

The first half was one to forget for both teams as they combined to commit 33 turnovers and only 30 points. The teams combined took only 42 shots in the first half, with each making five.

The Cowgirls quickly jumped out to a 4-0 lead, but a three-pointer by Thompson, along with a layup by Ogunoye and a Melanie Lane free throw tied the game at six. UTA took the lead for good when Tamesha Graves hit a three from the left baseline.

Ogunoye paced the Lady Mavs offense as she had her ninth straight double figure scoring game with 15 points. Wallace chipped in eight points and Thompson had six points and a game-high eight rebounds. The Cowgirls were led by Regina Spivey's 11 points.

After making only five field goals in the first half, UTA went 10-for-27 (.370) in the second half, while limiting MSU to just 4-for-19 (.211) shooting in the second stanza. For the game, the Cowgirls only made nine field goals.

The Lady Mavs return to action on Jan. 24 when they travel to Nacogdoches in search of their first ever win at Johnson Coliseum against Stephen F. Austin. Tip-off is set for 6:15.
