CHOUDRANT, La. - Texas-Arlington junior golfer Jeff Murray (Odessa, Texas) used steady play to posted a two-round total of even-par 144 to lead the Mavericks to first place after the opening day of the Squire Creek Intercollegiate Classic here Monday.
UTA leads Southland Conference foe Stephen F. Austin by three strokes after 36 holes. The Mavericks, who won the SMU Invitational on Oct. 5 can claim their second straight tournament win today on the par-72, 7,105-yard Squire Creek Country Club course.
Four Mavericks posted top 20 scores on opening day. Tyrone Mordt (Johannesburg, South Africa) is in eighth place with a two-over-par 146. Redshirt freshman Zack Reeves (Mansfield, Texas) is tied for 14th at 148 and Jordan Krantz (Vermillion Bay, Canada) is tied for 22nd at six-over-par 150. Competing as medalist, Bryan Baker (Whitehouse, Texas) tallied two rounds of 76 and 73 to stand in a tie for 16th.
SFA's Trevor Sauntry and Louisiana-Monroe's Casey Russell are tied for the medalist lead with a one-under-par 143.
Sophomore Marc Campbell (Southlake, Texas) rallied from an opening round 79 to post a 74 for a 153 and is tied for 36th place.
College golfing power Houston stands in third with a 592, five strokes behind UTA. Oral Roberts is fourth (596) and Louisiana-Monroe fifth (599).
