LAWRENCE, Kan. - Rola Ogunoye scored a season-high 21 points and grabbed 11 rebounds and Krystal Buchanan hit two free throws with 11.6 seconds remaining to give Texas-Arlington a 53-49 victory over Kansas in Allen Fieldhouse. The victory was the Lady Mavs second straight victory over a Big 12 school.
Ogunoye now has 1,215 points and is fifth on the all-time scoring list. She needs 11 points to tie Julie Coleman for fourth on the list.
With the Lady Mavs (2-0) ahead by two points with under 30 seconds to play, Ogunoye took a charge from KU guard Erica Hallman to give the ball back to UTA and set up Buchanan's free throws. Just seconds prior, Hallman hit a three-pointer to trim the lead to one point.
UTA fell behind by as many as 10 points early in the second half before Tabitha Wesley hit back-to-back three pointers to trim the deficit to four. Ogunoye would spark a 9-2 run with seven points to give UTA a three point lead.
Crystal Kemp would connect on a pair of field goals to give the Jayhawks a one-point lead with 6:12 to play. Terra Wallace would give the lead back to UTA for good with a pull-up jumper at the 5:36 mark.
The Lady Mavs would push the lead to six points on a three-point play by Ogunoye and another bucket by Wallace. A pair of baskets inside by KU would trim the advantage to two points, before Ogunoye grabbed a rebound and put it up and in with two minutes to play.
The Lady Mavs started the game on a 9-2 run as Wesley got the scoring started with a three-pointer from the right baseline. Alesheia White would then connect on her only field goal in the first half before Kemp put KU on the board with a short jumper. White would add a pair of free throws and Ogunoye would hit a shot from the inside.
The Jayhawks would quickly know the score before UTA went on a 10-2 run to open up a 19-11 lead at the 6:47 mark. Ogunoye contributed six points in the run and Terra Wallace and Ashley Bobb each hit a basket.
Kemp would then spark the Jayhawks offense with six of the next 10 points to give KU its first lead of the game at 21-19 with 1:53 to play. Wallace would tie the game back up with a pair of free throws before Kemp would score the final six points of the half, including a putback as the half expired to give KU the 27-21 advantage at intermission.
Ogunoye was joined in double figures by Wallace with 12 points. Wesley ended the game with a career-best nine points. Kemp led KU with 26 points and eight rebounds.
The Lady Mavs return to action next weekend, Nov. 28-29, as they head to Las Vegas to participate in the Lady Rebel Shootout. UTA will take on host UNLV on Nov. 28 at 6:30 p.m. and then take on either North Carolina or Villanova on Nov. 29 at 4 p.m. The road trip will conclude with a game at Southern Utah on Nov. 30 at 9:05 p.m. All times are central.
