CINCINNATI, Ohio - Cincinnati guard Treasure Humphries scored 12 of her career-high 23 points in the second half as the Bearcats withstood a strong second half push from Texas-Arlington in defeating the Mavericks 73-61 Wednesday afternoon at Fifth Third Arena.
"Our offensive rebounding really hurt us today," said head coach Donna Capps. "I think our 10 days off showed. Our offense was real sluggish at times and caused some players to get down on themselves."
"We weren't playing our signature defense until 10 minutes into the game and by that time already down. We just didn't play our defense long enough and we had a hard time on the boards."
UTA (3-3) did not show the rust from a 10-day layoff early on as a driving layup by Maryann Abanobi and a three-pointer by Terra Wallace helped the Mavs open up a 6-4 lead 2:30 into the game.
UC (6-1) would use its distinct height advantage inside to turn that two-point deficit into a seven-point advantage just five minutes later. Jill Stephens got the rally started with two straight baskets and Anne Stephens capped it off.
The Mavs would fall down by nine points before three free throws and an Ashley Cole steal and layup cut the deficit bck to four points. The lead would push back to seven before Abanobi nailed a trey to cut the deficit to 24-20 with 6:27 left in the first stanza.
UTA would then go cold from the floor and score only two points over the 2:51, allowing the Bearcats to open up a 10-point advantage. The Mavs would recover and go on a 7-0 run over the next 49 seconds to pull with three. Tojjinay Thompson hit a driving layup and then hit a three after a pair of Abanobi free throws.
The end of the half was owned by the 'Cats as they scored the final six points to take a 38-29 lead into recess.
The momentum at the end of the first half continued over into the second as UC started the half on a 10-4 run to open up a 48-33 lead. The run was temporarily silenced by an Abanobi three, before the 'Cats scored the next four points to open up their largest lead at 53-36 at the 13:38 mark.
The Mavs would seize momentum for the next 6:14 as they would go on a 18-5 run to pull within four points at 58-54. Ashley Bobb would lead the run with seven points, while Thompson would add four, including a rip at half court and break away layup.
Shelly Bellman took the air from the Mavs run with a three-pointer from the top of the key. Cole's basket just moments later brought the Mavs back to within five before UC would push its lead back out to double figures on a Kahla Roudebush jumper.
Abanobi led the Mavs offense with a career-best 14 points, while Bobb and Thompson added 12 apiece. Cole was the fourth Mav in double figures with a career-best 10 points. Wallace, the nation's 19th leading scorer, poured in just eight points, but tied her career-best with eight assists. Jones joined Humphries in double figures for UC with 17 points.
UTA was outrebounded on the offensive end for just the second time this season as the 'Cats outrebounded the Mavs 13-11. Overall, the Mavs were outrebounded 39-26.
The Mavs return to action on Dec. 16-17 when they participate in the UCF Holiday Classic in Orlando, Fla. UTA takes on Troy at 2 p.m. CST at the UCF Arena.
