ARLINGTON, Texas - Texas-Arlington women's basketball coach Donna Capps may have found the blueprint to success.
Using a full-court press, UTA went on a 16-0 run after surrendering the first four points of the game and never looked back in a 72-37 win over Lamar in a Southland Conference contest at Texas Hall Saturday afternoon.
UTA (15-7, 10-1) won for the tenth time in the past 11 games to stay atop the SLC league standings. The Mavs extended their home court win streak to 14 and for the 12th time in the past 20 games at Texas Hall, UTA has held an opponent under 50 points. Lamar drops to 8-14 and 2-9. The 37 points by the Lady Cardinals is the sixth lowest point total by the program since entering the NCAA in 1982-83.
Senior forward Rola Ogunoye poured in a season-high tying 22 points. Terra Wallace added 15 and Tabitha Wesley chipped in 12. Lamar was led in scoring by Andrea Samuel with seven.
The game was a carbon-copy of UTA's 57-43 win over Texas-San Antonio on Thursday. UTA staked a 38-12 halftime lead thanks to 17 first-half turnovers by UTSA.
On Saturday, Lamar committed 12 turnovers that resulted in 17 of the Mavs 35 first-half points.
UTA returns to action Saturday when they travel to Louisiana-Monroe at 5:30 p.m.
MAV NOTES: Ogunoye needs just 80 points to move into second place on the all-time scoring list. She has 1,487 career points and trails Natasha Johnson (1,695) and Carolyn Smith (1,567)... The 37 points is the fewest since a 50-34 win over New Mexico State on Dec. 4, 2004... UTA has now hit a three-pointer in 96 consecutive games.
