Feb. 24, 2005

Box Score

NACOGDOCHES, Texas - Senior forward Rola Ogunoye poured in a season-high tying 24 points as Texas-Arlington handed Stephen F. Austin its worst defeat in series history, 64-38, the William R. Johnson Coliseum Thursday night.

The Mavericks (16-8, 11-2) need two wins in their final three regular season games to assure themselves of their first conference championship. Stephen F. Austin (12-12, 6-7) drops its third straight game and into seventh place in the SLC.

The 26-point win was the largest by the Mavs in a series dating back to 1974 and the eighth in 50 meetings. UTA has won five on the last six meetings.

UTA guard Tabitha Wesley tied her personal best with six three pointers and finished with 18 points.

SFA was led in scoring by Alex Bowman with seven as the Ladyjacks made 1-of-15 (6.7%) from three-point range and 28 percent (14-of-50) from the field. The 38 points by SFA is the second fewest this season.

"I thought our defense was really good tonight," said UTA head coach Donna Capps. "We went back to the old defense of earlier in the year where we worked hard and got after people.

"I thought everyone played their role well tonight. The bench did a great job. It was the first time Terra (Wallace) ran the point, we did well on the boards and our intensity appeared back."

UTA went on a 10-0 run to break a 5-5 tie in the first half and never trailed from there on. Wesley and Ogunoye scored 12 points each in the first half. Wesley canned four, first-half three-pointers and Ogunoye made six-of-six free throws to help UTA to a 35-21 halftime lead.

UTA held SFA to one field goal the first six minutes of the second half to stretch the lead to 23, 47-24, after a Wesley three-pointer with 13:54 to play. The Ladyjacks were able to muster just five second-half field goals.

UTA led by as many as 30, 64-34, after an Ashley Bobb layup with 7:12 to play.

UTA returns to action Saturday when they travel to Texas-San Antonio. Tip-off is at 2 p.m.

MAV NOTES: Ogunoye needs just 41 points to move into second place on the all-time scoring list. She has 1,537 career points and trails Natasha Johnson (1,695) and Carolyn Smith (1,567)... Wesley's 54 three-pointers this season is the fourth best in school history and needs 13 to surpass leader LaToya Lewis' 67.
