HOUSTON, Texas - UTA senior golfer Jordan Krantz (Vermillion Bay, Canada) withstood a day of intermittent heavy rain to shoot a one-under-par 71 to share the top score after the opening day of the 2005 Rice Intercollegiate played at the Wildcat Golf Course here Monday.
UTA stands in fifth place as a team with an 18-hole total of 13 over-par 301. Southland Conference foe Sam Houston State leads the rain-shortened 36-hole event with a 294, followed by Nebraska at 295.
"Jordan had a solid, but we weren't able to get anything going from the rest of the guys," said UTA golf coach Jay Rees. "We have to try and go out and get better Tuesday. We can win the tournament with a good round on Tuesday."
Only Krantz, Nebraska's Ryan Lenahan, North Texas' Anthony Broussard and Rice medalist Heon Young Lee were able to shoot better than par. Krantz shot a sparkling 34 on the back nine of the 6,954-yard course.
Marc Campbell (Southlake, Texas) had a 39-37 for a 76. Tyrone Mordt (Johannesburg, South Africa) and Jeff Murray (Odessa, Texas) had 77s and Zack Reeves (Mansfield, Texas carded a 78.
Bryan Baker, competing as an individual, put together a 37 on both sides of the course for a 74.
The final round is scheduled to begin at 8 a.m. Tuesday on the The Highlands course.
