LAREDO, Texas - The Baylor Bears used strong play from New Mexico transfer Chase Thomas to build a 13-stroke lead over second-place UTA after the first day of the 54th Annual Border Olympics collegiate golf tournament here Friday.

Thomas recorded a hole-in-one on the par-three seventh hole to help the Bears to the two lowest rounds of the tournament, a 286 followed by a 284 for a two-round total of 570, 13 strokes head of UTA heading into Saturday's final round.

The Mavericks lead Louisiana-Monroe (584) by one stroke, Lamar (585) by two and is five strokes head of Michigan State and Louisiana-Lafayette. Thomas shot a three-under par 69 in the opening 18 holes and closed the day with a 70 for a five-under par total to lead individual play. Junior Jeff Murray is third individually shooting a 75 and a tournament low 68.

Tyrone Mordt (72-74), Jordan Krantz (75-72) and Zack Reeves (76-71). Marc Campbell from UTA leads the medalist play golfers shooting a 72-74 for a 146 first day total.
