ARLINGTON, Texas - The University of Texas at Arlington women's basketball team took control of its first round tournament game against Stephen F. Austin as the Mavs made 11 of their first 14 shots in racing out to an early lead and cruising to a 75-45 victory Monday evening at Texas Hall.
Ashley Bobb got the scoring going with a jumper and Tabitha Wesley and Terra Wallace followed with back-to-back three-pointers and the Mavs were quickly ahead 8-0. Brittan Vinson kept the Ladyjacks in the game early as she scored six points to keep SFA within eight points.
UTA (19-9) would continue its hot shooting and when Tamesha Graves hit a jumper with 6:50 remaining in the first half she put the Mavs ahead in double digits for good. That would be the start of a 17-5 run that would propel UTA to a 47-26 lead at intermission.
The second half was a carbon copy of the first as the Mavs distributed the offense throughout the team in opening up lead of 31 points with just under four minutes to play.
Graves led three Mavs in double figures with 14 points. She was joined in double figures by Rola Ogunoye with 13 points and Wallace with 12. Wesley added nine points, while Krystal Buchanan added seven and Bobb and Maryann Abanobi chipped in with six. Ogunoye led UTA on the glass with eight rebounds as the Mavs outrebounded SFA 31-29, including 12-4 on the offensive end.
For the game, UTA shot 23-for-47 (.489) after shooting 15-for-27 (.556) in the first half. The 46 first half points was a season-high as UTA ran its home court winning streak to 18 games, the sixth longest active streak in the NCAA.
The Mavs will return to action on Wednesday, March 9, as they play host to Northwestern State in the semifinals of the O'Reilly Auto Parts Southland Conference Tournament. Tip-off is set for 7 p.m. at Texas Hall.
