HUNTSVILLE, Texas - UTA freshman redshirt Quinchun Carey found sitting his first season to get his academics straight worth the wait as he captured the long jump title with a leap of 24-feet, 6.5-inches to highlight day two of the 2005 Southland Conference Outdoor Track and Field Championships Saturday.
The Fort Worth standout, who already qualified for the NCAA regional meet in Norman, Okla., helped UTA to fourth place in the eam standings with 33 points. Carey and Devario Johnson scored 15 points in the long jump events after Johnson, a sophomore, placed fourth with a leap of 23-feet, 7.5-inches.
Michael Sychrava earned all-SLC honors with a second-place finish in the high jump after matching his personal-best height of 6-08.75.
Stephen F. Austin leads the meet with 73.5 points. Sam Houston State is second folowed by Northwestern State (45), UTA (33), McNeese State (1.5), Texas-San Antonio (29), Southeastern Louisiana (22), Texas State (20) and Lamar (11).
Sunday's finals include field events (discus, triple jump and pole vault) at 1 p.m. and running finals at 5 p.m.
A handful of Mavericks advanced to the running finals during Saturday's prelims. Glen Taylor (200 meters), Jacob Cedertun (800-, 1,500-meters), Hunter Garner (800 meters), Daniel Noah (1,500 meters) are scheduled to compete Sunday. In the hurdle events, Jon McDowell will be in the 110-meter and 400-meter hurdles. Coby Morrison, a regional qualifier a year ago, advanced to the 400-meter hurdle finals. Paul Whitty and Adam Stafford will join McDowell in the 110-meter hurdle finals.
