Texas-Arlington falls to Oklahoma, 3-0

ARLINGTON, Texas - The Texas-Arlington volleyball team continued to struggle dropping a 32-30, 30-26, 30-11 decision to Oklahoma Wednesday evening at McCasland Field House. The Big-12 Conference Sooners (4-1) came from behind to win game one versus the Mavericks (1-5), then kept the pressure on, taking games two and three. In game one, the Mavericks started off hot, taking a 15-9 lead on the strength of three kills by senior outside hitter Ashley Van Antwerp. The Sooners fought back using a 12-7 run to cut the lead to, 22-21. Eliane Santos led the charge rallying off four kills during the stretch. The Mavericks looked to have the game in control with a 29-26 lead, but Oklahoma scored six of the next seven points to take the opening game, 32-30. Game two, saw the Sooners control it from the onset, taking a 15-11. Santos had the hot hand again slamming down three kills. The 6-2 outside hitter led Oklahoma with six kills in a game two 30-26 victory. Oklahoma opened game three with a 25-6 run. The Sooners coasted to a 30-11 score to take a three games to none victory. Van Antwerp led the Mavericks with 10 kills and chipped in with eight digs. Sophomore setter Emily Nedderman dished out 27 assists to go along with her two service aces and four digs. Santos led the Sooners with 19 kills and also had 12 digs, while setter Rachel Jackson tallied a game-high 56 assists. After posting a hitting percentage of .308 in game one, Texas-Arlington was held to a .184 and .000 hitting percentage in games two and three respectively. Oklahoma finished the evening with a .319 hitting percentage and topped the Mavericks in digs, 53-44. The loss was the Mavericks fifth straight after a season-opening victory over Prairie View A&M. The Mavericks will back in action this weekend when they host he 2005 Hilton UTA Volleyball Invitational. Texas-Arlington will welcome, Arkansas-Little Rock, Iowa, Texas-Pan American and Wake Forest to Texas Hall on Friday and Saturday. The Mavericks first match will be Friday at 7 p.m. when they are pitted against the Iowa Hawkeyes.
