Final Stats
BEAUMONT, Texas - Lamar's Alan Daniels scored seven points for the Cardinals in the final minute as they held off Texas-Arlington, 93-89, Saturday evening at the Montagne Center.
Down 86-85, with 1:40 remaining, Texas-Arlington (8-8, 1-2 SLC) got a huge layup from sophomore Larry Posey to take a one-point lead with 1:21 remaining.
Lamar (10-7, 3-1 SLC) retook the lead when Daniels drained a three pointer, two free-throws and a breakaway dunk to stave off the threat. The Mavericks missed three shots from behind the arc as they dropped to 1-2 in conference play.
Posey finished the game with a team-high 17 points to go along with five rebounds off of the bench. Senior Jarrett Howell chipped in with 12 points and a team-high six assists.
Daniel's, the preseason conference player of the year in the Southland, finished with 37 points and 12 rebounds to go along with four assists for the Cardinals. Brandon Chappell added 14 points and eight assists.
Texas-Arlington opened the game making 5-of-8 shots from the field to take a 12-10 lead with 15:31 remaining in the first half. Senior Brady Dawkins had the hot hand early, nailing a trey and a long deuce for five points.
Lamar fought back, using some great outside shooting as Matthew Barrow and Daniels both hits from outside to give the Cardinals a 28-25, with 7:27 left in the first half.
The Mavericks were able to tie the score, 34-34, with 3:15 remaining in the first half, but Lamar ended the half on a 10-6 run to take a 44-40 lead into the break.
Posey led all Mavericks with eight points at the break, while Daniels led the Cardinals with 18 first-half points. The Mavericks held a 23-17 rebound advantage in the first frame, which included 14 offensive boards, but the Cardinals were 6-of-10 from behind the arc.
The Mavericks will be back in action Thursday when they host last year's Southland representative in the NCAA Tournament, Southeastern Louisiana. Tip-off is set for 7:05 p.m. at Texas Hall. The Lions defeated Texas-Arlington, 57-41, last season in Hammond, La.
