HAMMOND, La. - The Texas-Arlington defense limited Southeastern Louisiana to 43 points and Melanie Lane scored a career-best nine points as the Mavs remained unbeaten in Southland Conference action with a 61-43 victory over the Lady Lions Thursday evening at the University Center.
The Lady Lions (5-10, 2-4) enjoyed their only lead of the game as Whitnee Miller scored the first points of the game on a driving layup.
UTA (11-5, 5-0) would score the next six points as Melanie Lane scored inside and Terra Wallace added a pair of freebies and Ashley Bobb converted inside.
Those six points were just the start of a 22-6 run over the first 10:31 of the half. Tojjinay Thompson hit two three-pointers during the run that ran her streak to seven straight triples made. Wallace added a triple of her own and Ashley Cole hit a pair of free throws.
Laney Watson would put a temporary end to the run with a three-pointer from the top of the key, but the play of freshmen Cole and Erin Dixon helped push the lead to 18 points. Cole would convert a driving layup and an outside jumper and Dixon would hit two shots inside in her first action since suffering an injury against TCU.
SLU would inch their way back into the game as they would score seven of the final nine points of the half to send the teams to recess with UTA ahead 34-23.
The Lady Lions came out in the second half and hit their first four shots to trim the deficit to 38-33 with 17:04 remaining. UTA responded with six straight points of their own as Maryann Abanobi hit a driving layup and Wallace followed with a layup and a steal and breakaway layup.
Wallace would pick up her fourth foul with 13:30 remaining and the team ahead by 12 points. Krisit Dudley would score the a basket inside and then feed Bobb for a layup to increase the advantage to 48-33. Baskets by Bobb, Lane, Abanobi and Lane again would help push the advantage to 56-39 with 6:54 remaining.
Neither team would muster much offense down the stretch as UTA would outscore SLU 5-4 during that stretch.
Wallace would end the scoring with a three-pointer from the left wing to finish with a game-high 15 points. She was joined in double figures by Bobb with 10. Bobb and Dudley led the team on the glass with six boards apiece and Wallace added five assists.
Brenita Williams was the only Lady Lion in double figures with 12 points and 10 rebounds.
The Mavs return to action on Jan. 21 as they travel to take on Nicholls State. Tip-off is set for 2 p.m. at the Stopher Gym.
