The UT Arlington men's cross country team did not have a runner finish in the top, but their overall depth gave the Mavericks a tie for fourth place at the 2006 Southland Conference Cross Country Championships at the Pecan Acres Park here Friday morning.
UT Arlington finished with 122 total points to tie league newcomer Texas A&M-Corpus Christi. Lamar snapped Stephen F. Austin's run of five straight conference championships with 37 points. SFA finished second with 50 points followed by UT Arlington at A&M-CC. Texas State (156), Texas-San Antonio (161), Southeastern Louisiana (230), Central Arkansas (234), McNeese State (286) and Northwestern State (293) completed the 11-team team field.
"We were more competitive (in the men's race)," said UT Arlington Head Cross Country Coach John Sauerhage said. "We are closing the gap with the top teams in the league. I thought Jody (Broccoli-Hickey), Idilio (Campos) and Armando (Saldivar) all had great races. We have a nice group of runners, but we have to continue to work hard an get better."
Junior Jody Broccoli-Hickey came in a cluster of three runners for 13th place with a time of 26-minutes, 04-seconds over the 8,000-meter course. Armando Saldivar (Fort Worth, Texas) recorded a top-20 finish with a time of 26;15 for 17th place. Idilio Campos (Mission, Texas) was 23rd with a 26:47 and Ivan Pinal (Fort Worth, Texas) finished 25th with a 26:50. Ozie Hood was 47th with a 28:14. Zach Davis (58th/29:10), Jeff Raines (72nd/31:15) and Dustin Poe (73rd/31:21).
Texas A&M-Corpus Christi sophomore Shadrack Songok won the race with a 24:20.
The team will compete at the NCAA South Central Regional, November 11, at the Bear Run Golf Course layout in Waco, Texas. - utamavs.com -
