COMETS CLIP MAVS, 78-76

UT-Dallas rallied from a 14-point deficit in the final 8:14 of the game to shock UT Arlington 78-76 in men's college basketball at Texas Hall Saturday afternoon.

UT Arlington (4-7) was led in scoring by Jermaine Griffin with 17 points. Ro'ger Guignard added 15 and Anthony Vereen came off the bench to score 10. UT Dallas (11-0), off its best start in the nine-year history of the program, was led in scoring with 19 points each from Martin Salinas and Scott Rodgers.

The Comets trailed 71-59 with 5:01 to play after Guignard canned a 3-pointer. A 16-3 run gave the Comets their first lead, 75-74, after a 3-point play by Ernie Lowery with 1:06 to play.

UTA's Cardell Hunter made two free throws with :55 seconds to regian the lead,76-75. UTD's Brandon Greene made a bank shot for a 77-76 lead. Guignard missed a 3-pointer with 27 seconds to play and UTD's Travis Carruthers grabbed the rebound. Jordan Eppink was fouled, stepped to the line, and made one free throw for a 78-76 lead with 19.1 seconds to play. Another missed 3-pointer by Brandon Long and a failed jumper by Guignard in the final :07 sealed the win for the Comets.

Leading 35-34 at halftime, UTA opened the second half with a 10-2 run to open the second half. Back-to-back lay ups by Terrell Henry gave the Mavs a 45-36 lead with 16:22 left in the game.

UT Dallas took the lead early behind long-range shooting. The Comets canned 6 of 11 3-pointers in the first 10 minutes of the game and built the lead to as many as eight, 24-16, after a Salinas 3-pointer with 10:35 left in the half.

UT Arlington went on a 10-2 run to catch the Comets. Anthony Vereen's 3-point play with 7:18 remaining in the first half tied the game at 28-28. The Mavs took a 31-28 lead after a Guignard 3-pointer with 5:47 left in the half. UTA stretched the lead to 35-30 on a lay up by Anthony Vereen with 4:26 to play, but the Mavs were held scoreless the rest of the half while UTD got two lay ups by Scott Rodgers in the final 2:19 to cut the lead to 35-34 at halftime.

UT Arlington will travel to Austin for a game at Texas on Jan. 2, 2007. Tip off is at 7 p.m. and will be regionally televised on FOX Southwest in the Dallas-Fort Worth market.
