WALLACE'S CAREER-DAY NOT ENOUGH IN DOUBLE OVERTIME LOSS

Feb. 16, 2006

Box Score

SAN ANTONIO, Texas - Junior guard Terra Wallace scored a career-high 34 points and Ashley Bobb pulled down a career-best 15 rebounds, but it was not enough as Texas-San Antonio outlasted Texas-Arlington, 68-67, in double overtime Thursday evening at the Convocation Center.

The two teams battled back-and-forth through the second overtime until Lacy Mingee gave the Roadrunners the lead for good with a basket inside. The Mavs could not score on their next possession and Nicole Dunson hit one-of-two free throws to push the advantage to three points. Another failed possession led to one more free throw for UTSA with 14.4 remaining to push the advantage to four. Jamie Buxkemper made the final play of the game as she banked in a three-pointer at the buzzer.

Wallace was the story for the Mavs in the first overtime as she hit a pair of free throws and followed it up with a three-pointer and two more free throws to put UTA ahead 57-55 with 1:40 left. Monica Gibbs tied the score before Tojjinay Thompson took a nice pass from Wallace and put it in for the two-point lead. Dunson would send the game to the second OT with a basket inside with 28 seconds remaining.

The final 43.7 of regulation set the stage for the game as after calling a timeout, UTA failed to get the ball inbounds. On the ensuing possession, Wallace ripped off a steal. After another timeout, the Mavs went to Wallace again, but she was called for an offensive foul with 6.2 left and UTSA was not able to get a good shot off.

The game started as a three-point shootout as the Mavs got triples from Thompson and Maryann Abanobi and the 'Runners countered with one from Dunson.

UTA (15-7, 9-2) would open up a four-point advantage at the 11:47 mark, but would go scoreless over the next 5:50 and UTSA would go on a 13-0 run during that stretch to take a 26-17 lead.

Melanie Lane would finally score for UTA, but UTSA would get a pair of baskets from Vivian Ewalefo to push the lead to its largest at 30-19 with 3:52 left in the first half. UTA would hold the Runners scoreless the rest of the half and Wallace would score the final five points on a pair of free throws and a deep triple from the left wing.

The Mavs came out in the second half and went on a 13-2 run over the first 5:50 to open up a 37-32 advantage. Thompson sparked the run as she hit a pair of free throws and followed it up with an old-fashioned three-point play on the next possession.

UTSA (14-9, 9-3) would respond over the next six-plus minutes and take a three-point advantage on a Katie Sandefour layup and an Ewalefo jumper at the 6:53 mark.

The Mavs stormed right back with a three-pointer from the corner from Buxkemper and a pair of Wallace free throws. UTSA would take its final lead of regulation on a pair of Ewalefo free throws before Wallace would grab back the lead on a Wallace jumper. The Runners would set up the final minute of the game with a jumper from Gibbs to tie the score.

Wallace added seven rebounds and five assists to go along with her career scoring day. It was the second game she has scored at least 30 points and the 10th time this season she has scored at least 20. She now has 1,058 points in her career and ranks 10th on the UTA all-time scoring list.

Wallace was joined in double figures by Thompson's 13 points. Bobb's career-day on the glass is her third straight game with at least 10 rebounds. Lane added 11 boards for the Mavs as they outrebounded UTSA 49-41.

Ewalefo led UTSA with 18 points and 11 rebounds, but it was the play of Gibbs that sparked the team. The freshman finished with 15 points, 14 rebounds and eight assists. MIngee was also in double figures with 10 points.

The Mavs return to action on Feb. 18 as they take on Lamar at 7 p.m. at the Montagne Center in Beaumont.
