ARLINGTON, Texas - After struggling in every facet of the game, except on the defensive end, the Texas-Arlington women's basketball team put it all together in a major way Thursday evening at Texas Hall as the Mavs held Northwestern State to two points over the first 13:14 and eased themselves to a 83-43 victory.
UTA (15-6, 9-1) seemed to find its offensive touch in the first half as the team hit 11-of-29 shots from the field. The defense continued to play its part as it limited the Lady Demons to 4-of-27 shooting and forced 21 turnovers.
Terra Wallace got the offense started with a pair of jumpers before NSU got on the board with a Shenise Milliner jumper at the 15:28 mark.
The Mavs would proceed to score the game's next 20 points and open up a 24-2 advantage. Wallace started the run with a three-point play and Tojjinay Thompson followed with a jumper just seconds later. Melanie Lane got into the act with a basket inside before UTA went to the outside. Ashley Bobb started the three-point parade with a triple from the top of the key and was followed by back-to-back three-pointers from Jamie Buxkemper.
The Lady Demons got their second field goal of the half at the 6:46 mark, 8:42 after their first basket, as Brittany Isom hit a shot inside and follow it up with a Chassidy Jones basket.
UTA would push its lead to as many as 25 points before taking a 34-11 lead into recess.
NSU (10-10, 3-6) would trim the deficit to 21 points as they would get a layup from Jones and another from Shenise Milliner.
UTA responded with an Ashley Bobb three-pointer which sparked a 9-3 run to open up a 27-point advantage. The three-pointer by Bobb was just the first of three in the second half that helped the Mavs open up a 70-37 lead with 4:31 remaining.
In the second half, UTA was 4-for-6 from beyond the arc. In the earlier meeting this season, UTA was 7-for-8 from three-point land in the second half.
Bobb led the Mavs as she scored 18 points and grabbed 10 rebounds for her second straight double-double. Abanobi joined Bobb with high-point honors as she established a new career-high with 18 points. Wallace was the third Mav in double figures with 15. She also tied her career-high with eight assists.
Off the bench, Buxkemper posted a new career-best with nine and Candice Champion added eight points and a collegiate-best seven boards.
Sheronda Bell paced the Lady Demons with 14 points, but was just 2-for-16 from the floor. Jones added 10 points and Milliner pulled down 11 rebounds.
