ARLINGTON, Texas - UT-Arlington junior first baseman/designated hitter Robby Winn was named the Aeropostale Southland Conference Hitter of the Week for the week of March 13, the league office announced Monday. Winn becomes the second Maverick to be honored this season as Adam Moore won the award on Feb. 14 and March 6.
Winn (Keller, Texas) was honored after going 7-for-12 (.583) with six RBIs and four runs scored as the Mavericks swept preseason favorite Northwestern State and posted their first series opening sweep since 1989. In the series opener, Winn went 3-for-5 and capped off the Mavs five-run eighth inning with an RBI single up the middle to tie the game.
Winn had his best day at the plate as a Maverick on Saturday as went 3-for-4 with a career-best five RBIs and three runs scored. He delivered an RBI single to center field in his first at-bat and followed it up with a two-RBI single to center field in the third. Winn came calling again in the fifth as he delivered a two-run single through the left side.
In the series finale, Winn went 1-for-3 with a run scored and drew his first walk of the season. His single came in his first at-bat as he ripped the first pitch he saw right back up the middle.
The Mavs return to action on March 14 when they play host to #21 Oklahoma. First pitch is set for 6:30 p.m. at Clay Gould Ballpark and can be seen on tape delay on Comcast Cable in Arlington.
