ARLINGTON, Texas - Texas-San Antonio guard Terrie Davis was 3-for-3 from beyond the arc in the three overtimes, including the go ahead triple with 45 seconds remaining in the third overtime as the Roadrunners advanced to the O'Reilly Autoparts Southland Conference Tournament final with a 76-75 thriller over Texas-Arlington Wednesday evening at Texas Hall.
The two teams would go back-and-forth in the third OT with Jamie Buxkemper giving the Mavs a one-point lead before Davis grabbed back the lead with a triple. After Terra Wallace tied the game with a jumper with 1:06 remaining, Davis nailed the clincher from the same spot as the one before. UTA failed to score on its next possession and Lacy Mingee hit one-of-two free throws for the four-point advantage with 10 seconds remaining. Wallace would hit a floating three-pointer at the buzzer for the final one-point margin.
The Mavs (20-9) nearly won the game in the first overtime as Wallace had the final shot and when her 13-footer went halfway down and popped back out, we were on to the second OT.
In that second OT, Davis got things started with a three-pointer and Lacy Mingee hit a shot inside two minutes later to put the Runners up 65-62 with 2:30 remaining. UTA would gain a one-point advantage on back-to-back jumpers from Ashley Bobb and Wallace with just over a minute remaining. Katie Sandefour would answer the bell as she knocked down a three-pointer from just in front of the UTA bench with 1:15 left. Wallace would score the final points of the second OT on a driving layup with 1:01 left.
The Mavs opened the second half with a six-point lead and pushed the advantage to 10 points on a Candice Champion layup with 15:55 remaining. UTA was able to maintain a five-point lead and take it into the eight-minute media timeout.
UTA would push the advantage to six points, but Davis would hit a three-pointer and Vivian Ewalefo would hit a pair of free throws to make it a one-point contest. Just moments later, Monica Gibbs would give UTSA its first lead of the game with 2:48 left.
The Runners (18-11) would trail by two points with 40 seconds remaining before Farren Fox would hit a floater in the lane to tie the score with 23 seconds left.
The Mavs had the final possession of regulation, but miscommunication on the floor led to a turnover.
The Mavs jumped out to an early double-digit advantage as they went on a 16-0 run over the first 6:57 of the contest. Champion started the scoring with a pair of free throws before Ashley Bobb putback her own miss and Terra Wallace hit a three-pointer. The lead continued to grow as Maryann Abanobi scored five quick points and Bobb closed out the run with another basket inside.
UTSA finally got on the scoreboard with a Gibbs free throws at the 13:03 mark. After Abanobi pushed the lead back to 15 points just moments later, the Roadrunners would go on an 11-2 run to cut the deficit to six.
Mingee would spark the run as she came off the bench to scored two quick baskets inside.
Bobb would put an end to the run with a three-pointer from the top of key before three more Runner baskets cut the deficit to 25-22 with 1:23 left in the half.
Wallace would close out the first half scoring as she would hit her second three-pointer from the left baseline to send the teams to recess with the Mavs ahead 28-22.
Bobb and Wallace paced UTA with a team-high 19 points. Bobb added a career-best 16 rebounds and Wallace had 10 rebounds and seven assists. Champion had the first double-double of her career with 12 points and 11 rebounds, career-highs in both categories. Abanobi added 15 points.
UTSA was led by Ewalefo's 19 points. She was joined in double figures by Mingee with 17 and Davis 12. Gibbs had nine points, 13 rebounds and nine assists.
