MAVS COMPLETE SWEEP OF VULCANS

April 19, 2006

Box Score

ARLINGTON, Texas - UT-Arlington second baseman Daniel Rieder went 3-for-4 with an RBI and Erik Cartmill picked up the victory in his first career start as the Mavericks swept the midweek series from Hawai'i-Hilo with a 7-4 victory Wednesday evening at Clay Gould Ballpark.

UTA (18-22) pushed a pair of runs across in the first as Daniel Rieder drew a leadoff walk and went to second on a single through the right side by James Smith. After a wild pitch, Adam Moore drove in a run with a groundout to shortstop. Smith stole third and scored on Robby Winn's sacrifice fly to center field.

The Mavs took advantage of fielding miscue to push two unearned runs across in the second. With one out, Kyle Rudy reached on a fielding error by the third baseman and Brock Wilson followed with a walk. After a double steal, Colin Booher plated a run with a groundout to first. Rieder drove in the second run with a opposite field dunk over the head of the third baseman.

The Vulcans (15-31) got on the board in the third inning as Mark Veneri plated a run with the third single of the inning.

UTA responded with a run in the home-half of the inning as Winn doubled off the wall in center field to start the inning. After a balk, Justin Stevens drove in the runner with a sacrifice fly to wall in center field.

UHH took advantage of a fortunate hop in the fourth to plate another run. A.J. Satele hit an opposite field double down the right field line and scored on a bad-hop single passed the first baseman off the bat of Chris Campbell.

UTA added another run in the fifth as Winn walked and took second on a wild pitch. Danny Slinkman singled through the right side and Kyle Rudy drove in Winn with a sacrifice bunt to first base.

A hit batter to start the seventh inning came around to score for the Vulcans. After Michael Higa was hit by the pitch, Kyle Curtis moved the runner to second with a single up the middle. A fielder's choice moved the runner to third before scoring on a wild pitch.

UTA got a run back in the bottom of the seventh as Winn singled through the left side and hustled to third on Slinkman's single to right field. Justin Stevens drove in Winn with a single to left field.

The Vulcans scored a run in the ninth inning for the second straight game as Jimmy Crider started things with a double to left center and scored on Veneri's sacrifice fly to center field.

Cartmill (1-0) picked up the victory as he allowed two runs on five hits in a predetermined four innings of work. He walked one and struck out four. Ryan Hanohano (1-10) took the loss as he gave up six runs, four earned, on five hits in four innings of work. He struck out one and walked five.

The Mavs return to the diamond this weekend as they host Texas-San Antonio in a key Southland Conference series. The series will get underway on Friday evening at 6:30 p.m. at Clay Gould Ballpark.
