UT Arlington def. Louisiana Lafayette 30-22, 27-30, 30-9, 30
Freshman outside hitter Teena Sobczak had 15 kills to lead a balanced attack as the UT Arlington Mavericks rolled to a four-game win over Louisiana-Lafayette in first day of the 2006 Hilton Arlington/UTA Invitational Friday.
UT Arlington improves to 6-2 with its third straight win of the season. Louisiana-Lafayette falls to 3-2.
Junior outside hitter Dani Johnson had 13 while Murray and Tori Dacus added 12. Defensively, senior Ashley Smith had 27 digs to lead UTA.
UT Arlington broke open a tight game four to seal the win. Lafayette built a 21-18 lead but UT Arlington rallied after a hitting error by Rachel Mauti, a Dacus ace, a Dani Johnson kill and a hitting error by ULL gave the Mavs a 22-21 lead. Lafayette scored three straight points before a service error by Jamie Sinegal. Johnson's ace gave the Mavs' a 25-24 lead.
UT Arlington stretched the lead to 27-25 after a Teena Sobczak kill. She deliver ed from the left side to give the Mavs a 29-26 lead. UT Arlington ended the match on a Dacus kill from the right side.
In game three, the Mavericks went on a 13-1 run to break away from Lafayette. A Murray kill from the right side gave UT Arlington a commanding 15-3 lead.
As a team, UT Arlington had an attack percentage of .297.
The nine points scored by Lafayette is the fewest allowed by a Mav team since a 15-1 game victory over Northwestern State to end the 2000 regular season. ULL struggled with 12 attack errors in the game and finished with a -.136 hitting percentage in game three.
UT Arlington won game one, 30-22, behind five kills from Dacus. Junior middle blocker Gina Kalb and junior setter Emily Nedderman had a .500 attack percentage during the game.
UT Arlington will conclude day one of the Hilton Arlington/UTA Invitational when they face Tulsa at 7 p.m. at Texas Hall.
