Wallace leads Mavs with 20 points over Nicholls State

STRONG SHOOTING GIVES MAVS 87-36 WIN OVER NICHOLLS STATE

ARLINGTON, Texas - UT Arlington women's basketball won its third straight SLC game 87-36 over Nicholls State Thursday night. Senior Terra Wallace led all scores with 20 points and junior Maryann Abanobi added 13 to the tally.

Freshman Meghan Nelson joined Wallace and Abanobi in double digits with 11 points hitting 5-7 from the floor. The Mavs (8-8, 3-0) shot a season high 52.1 percent on the night hitting 37-71 from the floor, while holding Nicholls (3-11, 1-2) to 22 percent and 9-41 from the floor. Junior Katherine Plummer led the Colonels with 18 points.

The Mavericks jumped out to the 16-9 lead with 14:24 left in the first half hitting four tres in the opening minutes of the game. Over the next three minutes UTA outscored Nicholls 9-6 for the 11-point advantage (25-14). A three from Wallace followed by a lay-up from Nelson put the Mavs ahead 30-14 with 8:03 left in the half.

Six unanswered points by UTA gave the Mavs a 20-point lead (36-16) with 5:17 left in the half. Over the last minutes of the half UTA went on an 11-5 run for the 47-21 lead heading into the locker room. For the first half the Mavs shot 59.4 percent hitting 19-32 from the floor.

UTA opened the second half with a 13-2 run sparked by an old fashion three point play from junior Tiffeny Riles to extend its lead to 37 (60-23) with 15:48 on the clock. Back-to-back baskets from sophomore Candice Champion increased the Mavs lead to 43 (72-29) with 6:53 left in the game.

Nelson converted on three point play at the 5:30 mark to give UTA the 75-33 advantage. Down the stretch UTA outscored the Colonels 12-3 with freshman Kiarra Shofner hitting a jumper with no time on the clock to seal the 87-36 victory.

UTA will be back in action at Texas Hall on Saturday as they play host to Southeastern Louisiana at 4 p.m.
