ARLINGTON, Texas - UT Arlington junior guard Maryann Abanobi did not see Tuesday night's game against Texas-San Antonio as a revenge match.
After losing a double overtime televised game and a triple-overtime affair to be bounced out of the Southland Conference Postseason Tournament a year ago, you couldn't blame her if it was.
The Mavericks used a 24-4 run to end the first half to pull away from Texas-San Antonio 67-38 in Southland Conference women's basketball play at Texas Hall Tuesday night.
UT Arlington (11-8, 6-0) won its sixth straight game while UTSA fell to 6-11, 2-3.
Senior Terra Wallace, the Southland Conference Player of the Week, led a balanced attack with 14 points. Tiffeny Riles scored 11 points in the first half and finished with 13. Maryann Abanobi added 12. UTSA was led by Vivian Ewalefo with 19 points and 10 rebounds. Monica Gibbs added 10 points.
"I thought we were quick to ball tonight and did a good job defensively," said UTA Women's Basketball Coach Donna Capps. "We have done a good job this year of not getting too emotional for any game this season. We have truly taken this one game at a time."
Both teams were slow to start the game. UTSA missed nine of its first 11 field goals while the Mavs could make just four field goals in the first 11:00 of the game. UTSA led 10-9 after Gibbs scored on a reverse lay up with 9:21 to play in the half. UT Arlington's Candice Champion scored on a basket in the paint to give UTA a lead they would never give up. The basket started an 8-0 run over the next 1:45 as the Mavs led 18-10 after an Ashley Bobb lay up with 7;14 to play. The Mavericks stretched the lead to 33-14 at halftime as UTSA shot just 21.7% (5-of-23) from the field.
The Mavs kept the pressure on in the second half by out-rebounding UTSA 20-7. The Mavericks ended the game winning the battle on the boards 42-21.
UTA opened the second half on a 10-2 run to lead 43-16 after a Tojjinay Thompson 3-pointer with 16:17 to play. UTA's largest lead was 37, 67-30, after a Champion lay up with 1:25 left in the game.
UTA continued a four-game in eighth day stretch when they travel to Huntsville to face Sam Houston State Thursday at 7 p.m. The Mavs return home for a key SLC game against Stephen F. Austin on Saturday at 4 p.m.
MAV NOTES: Thompson tied a career-high with 10 rebounds... The Mavs' 6-0 start in SLC play matches last year's start and trails only the 2004-05 team's 8-0 start. That team went on to win the SLC Postseason Tournament and advanced to the school's first NCAA Tournament appearance.
