NATCHITOCHES, La. - UT Arlington women's basketball won its second conference game of the season 64-48 at Northwestern State Saturday. Senior Terra Wallace (Round Rock, Texas) led all players scoring 17 points.
Junior Maryann Abanobi (Sugar Land, Texas) finished the day with 14 points while junior Tiffeny Riles (Lewisville, Texas) added 16 points for the Mavs (7-8, 2-0). NSU (6-7, 0-2) was led by Chassidy Jones and Ashli Barnum with 12 point each.
Northwestern State jumped out to a 6-2 lead in the first three minutes of action, but UTA answered with a 13-0 run to take the 15-6 lead with 11:52 on the clock. Over the next five minutes UTA outscored NSU 10-8 for the 11 point advantage (25-14).
A three and long jumper from senior Wallace put the Mavs up 30-15 with 5:55 left in the half. Nine unanswered point brought the Demons with in six (30-24) at the 2:24 mark. UTA closed out the first half with a 4-3 run for the seven point advantage (34-27).
At the break three Mavs had scored double digits led by junior Abanobi with 12 points. Junior Riles added 11 while Wallace notched ten for the first half.
The Demons opened up the second half with 6-4 run to get within five (38-33) with 15:00 left in the game. Five points by Wallace gave UTA the eight point lead at the 12:41 mark.
A pair of free throws from freshman Kiarra Shofner (Cedar Hill, Texas) at the 8:27 mark gave UTA the ten point advantage (47-37). Over the next six minutes the Mavs went on a 9-5 run to lead 58-44 with 2:35 left in the game. To close out the game UTA went on a 7-4 run to seal the 65-48 win.
UTA will return home to Texas Hall for its conference home opener on Thurs. (1/11) as it plays host to Nicholls State. Tip-off is set for 7 p.m. with J. Gilligan's sponsoring $1 drinks.
