The UT Arlington Mavericks fired the low afternoon round with a six-under-par 278 to move to within three shots of leader Texas Tech after the opening day of the 2007 Herb Wimberly Intercollegiate here Monday.
UT Arlington leapfrogged past Kansas State and Nevada to hold down second place with a 36-hole total of 560. K-State and Nevada are tied for third at 566.
"I thought we finished the (afternoon) round," said UT Arlington Head Golf Coach Jay Rees, now in his ninth season. "We had a chance to go six or seven under in the morning, but we didn't come through on short par-4s. (In the afternoon) Michael Douthit eagled down the stretch. Zack (Reeves) had a birdie on the final hole and Michael (van de Venter) birdied two of the final three holes."
Loyola Marymount (571), Cal Poly (573), Louisiana-Monroe (575), Miami, Ohio (576), Ball State (577) and host New Mexico State (579) round out the top 10. The rest of the field has South Alabama (580), Northern Colorado (581), Washington State (584), Rice (591), UTEP (594), Nebraska 9603) and Towson (605) after the opening day on the par-71, University Club course.
Individually, senior Zack Reeves and sophomore Bobby Massa turned in identical rounds of 70 and 69 for 139s, three shots behind leader Joe Ida of Kansas State and Garrett Merrell of Texas Tech.
Senior Michael Douthit matched his lowest career round with a 69 in the afternoon and is tied for 12th at 141 after a morning round of 72. Sophomore Michael van de Venter is also at 141 after a 70 and 71.
Freshman Zack Fischer had rounds of 73 and 75 on the opening day.
The final round is Tuesday at 8 a.m.
