UT Arlington sophomore Bobby Massa fired a final round 66 and broke the 54-hole record to lead the team to a school 54-hole scoring record by 16 strokes for second place at the 2007 Herb Wimberly Intercollegiate here Tuesday.

Massa's 66 ties for the fourth lowest round ever recorded by a Maverick. His 54-hole total of 205 set the mark, eclipsing the old record of 206 by Shad Muth set March 19, 2002, at the 2002 Cleveland Golf Classic. Massa finished third in the standings, three strokes behind medalist Sergio Franky of Texas Tech who carded a final round 65 and a tournament total of 202.

Senior Zack Reeves tied for fifth with a final round 69 for a five-under-par 208. His score tied for sixth lowest in program history.

Sophomore Michael van de Venter finished at 211 and tied for 13th after a 70 on the final day. Senior Michael Douthit set a personal-best with a 212 total after a Tuesday round of even-par 71 on the 7,074-yard University Club course.

Freshman Zack Fischer finished tied for 38th with a 218 (73-75-70).

"I thought we played great today, we just got beat by a team ranked in the top 20 who was at the top of their game," said UT Arlington Head Golf Coach Jay Rees. "I was proud of the way everyone competed for the tournament. Michael Douthit had a great tournament and I can't say enough about the good things Zack (Reeves), Bobby (Massa) and (Michael) van de Venter did this week."

Tuesday's round of nine-under-par 275 tied the school mark set earlier this year at the UT Arlington Fall Classic. The team's 54-hole total of 835 bested the score of 851 at the Fall Classic earlier this fall.

Texas Tech, ranked 18th in this weeks poll, won the tournament with a score of 21-under-par 831. UT Arlington (835) followed with Kansas State and Nevada (844) tied for third. Ball State (856) was fifth and Loyola Marymount (859) claimed sixth place. Louisiana-Monroe (862), New Mexico State (864), Miami, Ohio 9864) and Cal poly (866) round out the top 10. The rest of the 17-team field had South Alabama (868), Washington State (873), Northern Colorado (883), Rice 9885), UTEP (891), Nebraska (901) and Towson (916).

UT Arlington will finish the fall season next week when they compete at the Turtle Bay Intercollegiate, Nov. 4-6.
