ARLINGTON - Junior Candice Champion scored a career-high 18 points to lead UT Arlington (1-1) in the 69-56 win over Pittsburg State on Monday at Texas Hall. Senior Maryann Abanobi led the Mavs on the glass with a team-high seven boards.
UTA jumped out to a 5-0 lead, but PSU answered quickly with an 8-2 run for the one point advantage with 14:30 left in the first half.
A layup from Champion sparked a 19-5 run to give the Mavs a 26-13 advantage.
The Gorillas battled back to cut Mav's lead to four (26-22) at the 2:56 mark, but in the final three minutes of the half UTA outscored PSU 10-to-2 to take the 36-25 lead into locker room.
PSU came out of the break and went on a 19-12 run capped with back-to-back tres from Liz White to cut the Mavs lead to four (48-44) with 12:54 left in the game.
Over the next five minutes, Champion scored eight straight points for the Mavericks, but the Gorilla's matched them point-for-point.
With back-to-back baskets, Champions sparked a 9-0 run by the Mavs to take a 69-56 lead into the final minute of action.
The Mavericks will be back in action on Saturday when they welcome Montana State to Texas Hall for a 2 p.m. tip.
