ARLINGTON - Senior guard Maryann Abanobi led UT Arlington to the 70-43 win over Montana State on Saturday at Texas Hall with a career-high 22-points. The Mavericks improved their record to 2-1 while handing the Bobcats their first loss dropping them to 2-1 on the season.
Junior Erin Dixon recorded her first double-double of the season with 10 points and 11 rebounds, while sophomore Kristina Grace added a career-high ten points in the win. Rebecca Mercer led the Bobcats with 15 points and Krislyn Wallace pulled in a team-high none rebounds.
Neither team scored until the 17:14 mark in the first half when Dixon sank a layup. Montana State countered with a 6-0 run for the four-point advantage with 15 minutes left in the half.
The Bobcats maintained the four-point lead as both teams scored seven points over the next two and a half minutes. However, over the next seven minutes, the Mavs went on a 14-0 run to take the lead 23-13.
UTA outscored MSU 9-8 in the final five-minutes of the first half to take a 32-21 lead into the locker room.
Rebecca Mercer scored six points for the Bobcats to kick-off the second half and cut the Mavs lead to nine (36-27). A free throw from Shalyn Martin and a jumper from Abanobi at the 14:55 mark put UTA back on top by ten.
A fast break layup from sophomore Meghan Nelson sparked a 14-0 run by the Mavericks to lead 57-32 with six minutes left in the game.
The Mavs closed out the game with a 13-11 run for the 27-point win.
UT Arlington will be back in action on Friday, Nov. 23 at the Timeout 4 HIV/AIDS Tournament hosted by Pepperdine University in Malibu, Calif. In the opening round of the tournament, the Mavs will face-off with host Pepperdine at 5:30 p.m. (CST).
