FLAGSTAFF, Ariz. - UT Arlington women's basketball opened up its regular season with a loss, 64-50 at Northern Arizona on Friday.
Junior Candice Champion led the Mavs with 14 points and six rebounds while sophomore Kristina Grace added a career-high eight-points and five boards.
Northern Arizona took the early 6-0 lead, but a Shalyn Martin jumper and a three-point play from Champion cut the Lumberjack lead to one.
Back-to-back jumpers from Tiffeny Riles and Kiarra Shofner gave UTA its first lead of the game, 9-8 with 13:57 left in the half.
A shot from beyond the arch from Shofner and a jumper from Grace drove the Mavs lead to four (18-14). However, the Lumberjacks hit 4-8 from the charity stripe in the last three minutes of the half for the 35-33 advantage at the break.
The Lumberjacks opened the second half with a 4-1 run to extend their lead to five (39-34) with 16:42 left in the game.
A fast-break layup from Shofner at the 13:17 mark cut NAU's lead to two.
Over the next three minutes, NAU went on a 7-2 run for the 49-42 advantage. The Mavs answered with back-to-back layups from Grace to cut the Lumberjacks lead to three.
In the final eight minutes of the game, Northern Arizona went on a 15-4 run to win 64-50.
The Mavs will be back in action when they return to Texas Hall for their home opener with Pittsburg State on Monday at 5 p.m.
