ARLINGTON, Texas - In the first time meeting between UT Arlington and Marshall, it took three overtime periods, but the Thundering Herd came away victorious, 97-91, on Tuesday at Texas Hall. Senior Maryann Abanobi led all scorers with 26 points as the Mavs fall to 3-4 on the season.
Kizzy Hart led Marshall with 24 points as they improved to 7-4 on the season.
The Mavs held a 10-point lead at the half, but Marshall slowly chipped away taking over the lead five minutes into the second half.
Abanobi hit a free throw with 40 seconds left in regulation to send the Mavericks into their first overtime game of the season.
Senior Tiffeny Riles, who finished the day with her first double double of the season, hit a jumper with five second left in the first overtime to put UTA up by one.
On the other end of the court sophomore LaTosha Duffey fouled Hart as she was shooting a three, setting Marshall up with three free shots. Hart missed the first, missed the second, but sank the third to send the game into double overtime.
In the second overtime freshman Tamara Simmons sank a layup with 44 second on the clock to tie the score 83-83, and added a steal to force yet another overtime.
Hart scored eight of Marshall's 14-points in the third overtime to secure the win for the Thundering Herd.
Riles finished the night with a season-high 16 points and led the team with 17 rebounds. Junior Candice Champion also recorded her first double double of the season with 13 points and 11 boards.
The Mavs head to Charlotte, N.C. for the SpringHill Suites Holiday Classic where they will face a set of first-time opponents. UTA will open the tournament against Elon on Thursday at 4 p.m. (CT) and then move on to face host UNC-Charlotte at 6:30 p.m. (CT) on Friday.
