ARLINGTON, Texas - UT Arlington women's basketball won its 13th straight Southland Conference game, 72-54, over Texas A&M Corpus Christi at Texas Hall on Saturday. The Mavs improved their record to 18-8 overall and 13-0 in SLC play. With the win UTA remains the only unbeaten team in the conference.
Senior Ashley Bobb recorded her second double double in as many games with 13 points and 13 rebounds. Freshman Meghan Nelson set a new career high with 14-points to lead the Mavs. Senior Terra Wallace and junior Tiffeny Riles both added double digit scores for the Mavs with 14 and 11 points respectively.
In the first half Abanobi hit a basket from beyond the arch at the 15:37 mark to give UTA the 9-5 advantage. Corpus Christi's (12-13, 7-5) Kirbria Lewis converted on an old fashion three point play to knot the score 11-11 with 14:18 left in the half. A lay-up from freshman Nelson followed by a jumper from Abanobi gave the Mavs a 15-13 lead at the 12 minute mark.
Back-to-back baskets from Bobb with the addition of an old fashion three point play from Nelson extended the Mavs lead to six (22-16) with 9:42 left in the first half. Two minutes later Nelson converted on her second three-point play of the game to put UTA ahead 27-19. A steal from Wallace and a quick lay-up from Nelson put the Mavs up 35-24 heading into the locker room.
The Islanders opened the second half with a 12-6 run to cut the Mavs lead to five (41-36) with 16:06 on the clock. UTA answered with a 10-0 run capped with a pair of free-throws from Riles to regain a 15-point lead (51-36) at the 11:56 mark.
Over the next seven minutes UTA extended its lead to 23 (69-46) with an 18-10 run capped with a put-back from sophomore Candice Champion. The Islanders' 8-3 run over the final three minutes of play could not overcome UTA's 18-point advantage.
The Mavs will look for win number 14 as they continue Southland Conference action on Thursday when Sam Houston State comes to Texas Hall for a 7 p.m. tip.
