SAN MARCOS, Texas - It was Saturday afternoon at the Bijou and the feature presentation was an Old West shoot `em up.
UT Arlington outgunned Texas State 110-103 in a Southland Conference men's basketball game at Strahan Coliseum.
UT Arlington (8-14, 3-6) won for the third time in four games while Texas State fell to 8-14 and 3-6.
Sophomore guard Brandon Long poured in a career-high 26 points to lead six players in double figures. Rodrick Epps (19), Larry Posey (18), Anthony Vereen 916), Ro'ger Guignard (12) and Jermaine Griffin (10) all had double figures. Texas State, which set a record for 3-pointers made with 16, also had six in double figures led by Dylan Moseley's 23 points.
It is the first game since the Mavs' 124-123 triple-overtime win over Sam Houston State on Dec. 28, 1998, that the Mavs played a game where both teams scored 100 points and it marks the first time since UTA's wins over Schreiner (121-61) and Sul Ross (105-91) in December 1992 that the Mavs have scored 100 points in back-to-back games.
UT Arlington made a season-best 35-of-42 free throws (83.3%), including 11 straight free throws midway through the second half that gave the Mavs the lead for good. The free throws sparked an 18-5 run that rallied the Mavs from an 82-81 deficit to a 99-87 lead after a Long lay up with 3:49 to play.
UT Arlington led 53-48 after a first half that saw both squads scorch the nets. The Mavs canned 55.9% (19-of-34) from the field while Texas State hit 51.6% (16-of-31).
Texas State led early, 12-4, after a jumper by George Kiel with 14:33 to play in the half. UT Arlington broke a 37-37 tie with 4:30 to play in the half with a 7-0 run after two Epps free throws with 2:47 left in the half.
