UT Arlington guard Rodrick Epps knifed through the Lamar defense for a lay up with 12 seconds remaining as the Mavericks defeated Lamar 76-74 in a Southland Conference men's basketball game at Texas Hall Thursday night.
UT Arlington (9-14 , 4-6) won for the fourth time in five games. Lamar (9-14, 3-6) fell to 1-10 on the road this season.
Jermaine Griffin poured in 12 points after halftime to lead three Mavs in double figures with 18 points. Ro'ger Guignard added 17 and Anthony Vereen came off the bench for 11 points.
Lamr was led by Lamar(cq) Sanders' 18 points. Brandon Chappell canned five 3-pointers for 17 points and James Davis came off the bench with 15 points and nine rebounds.
Epps' basket stretched UT Arlington lead to 76-72. Sanders scored a basket with 0.2 seconds left on the game clock. The Mavs in bounded the ball and ran out the clock for the win.
UTA had to hold off the Cardinals in the second half. UTA led by 13 points, 25-12, in the first half after a jumper by Vereen with 10:05 left in the first half. UTA nursed the lead throughout the half and back-to-back baskets by Larry Posey and Guignard in the final minute stretched the lead back to nine, 40-31, at halftime.
Lamar came out aggressive in the second and took their only lead of the game, 61-60 , after two Davis free throws with 7:02 to play. But a lay up by Griffin gave the Mavs the lead for good, 62-61, with 6:21 to play.
