UT Arlington junior Zack Reeves (Arlington, Texas) put together rounds of 69 and 68 to take a one stroke lead after the first day of the Border Olympics here Friday.

UT Arlington is tied with Houston for third place in the 15-team field with a 36-hole total of 570. Lamar, ranked ninth in the golfweek.com Division I poll, scorches the course in the afternoon with an 18-under-par 270 to take the lead with a 555, 11 strokes better than second place Vanderbilt.

The rest of the field includes defending champion Baylor (573), Notre Dame and Louisiana-Lafayette (578), South Alabama (580), Arkansas (581), North Texas (583), Washington State (590), Texas State (591), Memphis (594), Rice (597) and Arkansas-Little Rock (614).

Reeves leads Lamar's Oliver Bekker and Justin Harding who are both at six-under-par 13. Bekker shot the low round of the tournament with an eight-under-par 64 on the par-72, 7,241-yard layout at Laredo Country Club.

Reeves went four-under-par on the par-4 holes and five-under on the par 5s.

The morning round of seven-under-par 281 is a season-low score for the Mavs, ranked 113 according to golfweek.com, for events through March 13.

Four Mavs shot under-par scores in the morning round on a clear day near the banks of the Rio Grande river.

Freshman Bobby Massa carded a 71 and 72 for a 143. Bryce Easton had a two-under-par 70 in the morning and shot a 75 in the afternoon to finish tied for 31st at 145.

Freshman Michael van de Venter had a 71 and 76 for a 147 and senior Bryan Baker shot a 75-74 for a 36-hole total of 149.

The final round is Saturday and will be posted early Sunday on utamavs.com.
