ARLINGTON, Texas - UT Arlington softball downed Centenary College, 3-1, in a non-conference meeting at Allan Saxe Field Wednesday. The Mavs improve their overall record to 13-10 while the Ladies fall to 12-11 on the season.
After giving up one run in the first inning freshman Cara Hulme worked the Mavs out of danger striking out two in a row to end the inning.
Junior Katie Jones hit a double to lead off the Maverick half of the first inning and scored on a single to left field from catcher Samantha Chumchal. Chumchal's hit also plated freshman Brittany Washington who reached on a walk for the 2-1 lead.
The Mavs threatened to score in the bottom of the fourth with two outs and the bases loaded when Katie Jones flew out to deep center field to end the inning. UTA did add a run in the bottom of the fifth to lead 3-1.Chumchal doubled to left center to drive home Dee Jay Nelson for the two run win.
Hulme (4-5) went the distance on the mound giving up one earned run on four hits with six strike outs. Chumchal went 2-for-2 while recording all three RBI on the night for the Mavs.
Stacey Whitmer (6-3) took the loss for the Ladies in 3.1 innings of work giving up two runs on three hits and three strike outs.
UTA returns to the field for its third SLC series of the season as it plays host to Northwestern State beginning with a double header on Saturday at 1 p.m. The series will conclude with a single game at 1 p.m. on Sunday.
