NACOGDOCHES, Texas - UT Arlington senior Linda Rosema had a knack of turning in her best marks of the outdoor season at the conference meet.
This year is no different.
Rosema overcame two foul throws to rebound and claim fourth place in the hammer throw with the second best throw in school history with a throw of 168-feet, 07-inches during the opening day of the 2007 Southland Conference Outdoor Track and Field Championship at Homer Bryce Stadium here Friday.
Day two of the meet includes the final events in the women's heptathlon and men's decathlon at 9 a.m. The finals in the high jump, long jump, javelin and shot put will get underway at 1 p.m. and running prelims begin at 5 p.m. The finals in the 3,000-meter steeplechase is slated to begin at 8:30 p.m.
Rosema, who scored points in all three throws events in the hammer, shot put and discus at last year's conference meet, fouled her first two throws of the day, but rebounded with a final-qualifying throw of 46.36 meters to advance. The Azle, Texas, native then uncorked three straight throws over 50 meters, including the toss of 168-07 for fourth place. Freshman Emma Stahlberg, who entered the competition ranked 11th in the conference, finished eighth with a personal-best throw of 154-10.
UT Arlington stands in a tie for fifth place with six points. Host Stephen F. Austin leads the meet with 21 points Southeastern Louisiana (18), Lamar (13) and Texas State (11) round of the top four with McNeese State (6) and Sam Houston State (3) all scoring points on the first day.
"Linda had a nerve-wracking event," said UT Arlington Head Track and Field Coach John Sauerhage. "She really rallied in the finals. I thought Emma had a big day to score a point in an event she was ranked outside of the top 10 prior to the meet."
