The UT Arlington men's golf team fired a first-round total of 12-over-par 296 to take a two-stroke lead into the final day of the first Texas Cup Intercollegiate Tournament here Monday.

The Mavericks finished play as the faded into the Hill Country skyline. Steady play on the par-71, 7,389-yard University of Texas Golf Club course left the Mavs two strokes better than New Orleans (298) and four better than host Texas and the College of Charleston.

"We made a few mistakes but we were able to grind it out today," said UT Arlington Head Golf Coach Jay Rees. "If we can go out there and shot 290-292 on Tuesday we will win this tournament."

Six Maverick golfers are ranked in the top 15 after the opening day.

Seniors Zack Reeves and Buddy Wilkins, competing as an individual, and sophomore Michael van de Venter are tied for fourth at two-over-par 73. Sophomores Bryce Easton and Bobby Massa and freshman Zack Fischer are tied for 15th with a 75. Massa card a 75 despite two triple bogeys on the first 18 holes.

Northern Iowa's Jordan Weber was the only golfer to shoot under par on Monday with a 31 on the front nine en route to a three-under-par 68.
