MURFREESBORO, Tenn. - The UT Arlington volleyball team dropped back-to-back matches for the first time since the 2005 season as #25 Middle Tennessee handed the Mavs a 16-30, 22-30, 21-30 defeat Saturday afternoon at the Blue Raider Bash.
The Blue Raiders (10-0) stormed out of the gates and scored the first eight points in forcing a quick timeout from the Mavs. UTA finally got on the board with a kill from Ellen Murray and a block from Murray and Liz Curry. The Mavs would pull within five on a kill from Emily Nedderman and a service ace from Curry, but that would be it as Ashley Adams recorded five kills and Ashley Mead added four as the Blue Raiders hit .455 in the game in taking it 30-26.
The second game looked to be following the first as the Blue Raiders scored four of the first five points before the Mavs rallied to take their first lead of the match at 7-6 on back-to-back hitting errors from MTSU.
The two teams would exchange points for the majority of the game until MTSU broke a 19-19 tie with a 5-0 run that was sparked by a pair of blocks from Adams and Ashley Asbury, and served as the beginning of the end in the 30-22 decision.
The Mavs (5-4) came out of the intermission and scored two of the first three points before MTSU took control on a pair of kills by Asberry. UTA hung tough as Curry recorded four kills in the final game, but the Blue Raiders pulled away for the 30-21 victory.
Curry, Murray, Teena Sobczak and Gina Kalb each recorded six kills.
The Mavs return to the court at 7:30 p.m. as they close out the Blue Raider Bash against Northeastern.
