NATCHITOCHES, Louisiana - Northwestern State handed UT Arlington its ninth straight loss with a 25-13, 25-22, 25-11 victory Wednesday night at Prather Coliseum in Natchitoches, La. The loss drops the Mavericks to 4-16 overall and to 0-6 in the Southland Conference. Northwestern State improves its overall record to 7-10 and to 2-5 in the SLC.
Sophomore setter Raegan Daniel led the Mavericks with a team-high 11 digs and 16 assists, recording her team-leading sixth double-double of the season
In the first set, Northwestern State broke a 2-2 tie with a 6-1 run which forced UT Arlington head coach Diane Seymour to call the first timeout of the match.
Despite five kills from UT Arlington freshman Amanda Aguilera, the Lady Demons continued to cruise winning the first set 25-13. Northwestern State posted its largest lead of 13 points on three occasions during the set.
UT Arlington grabbed an early 7-3 lead in the second set after Aguilera notched her seventh kill and Ally Wade and Emily Shearin combined for a block assist. Northwestern slowly climbed back into the set and then took the lead, 11-12, following two kills and two blocks during a 4-0 run.
Midway through the set, Aguilera put down a kill and freshman libero Alicia Shaffer tallied back-to-back aces to give the lead back to UT Arlington. The Mavs held the lead for most of the set until Northwestern State finished on a 7-2 run to take a 2-0 lead in the match.
Shaffer led the Mavericks in the second set with five digs while Aguilera and Wade combined for six of the Mavericks' eight kills in the set.
UT Arlington started the third set with a 7-3 lead after Aguilera and Daniel each recorded two kills and Northwestern State committed three errors. The Lady Demons stormed back into the set going on a 14-1 run to take a commanding 17-8 lead in the final set. Northwestern State closed out the match with 16 kills and just three errors in the finals set.
The Lady Demons finished the match with a .319 hitting percentage while the Mavericks tallied just 23 kills with 16 errors for a .074 hitting percentage.
Aguilera had her streak of four straight matches with a double-double snapped, as she finished with a team-high 10 kills and five digs. She was the only Maverick player with more than four kills in the match.
UT Arlington will return to Texas Hall in Arlington on Friday, Oct. 17, hosting SLC Eastern Division second-place Central Arkansas (13-4, 5-1).
