SAN MARCOS, Texas - Texas State won its eighth straight Southland Conference volleyball match with a 25-14, 25-10, 25-12, victory over UT Arlington on Tuesday night in San Marcos, Texas. On their annual "Dig for the Cure Match," the Bobcats were in control from the start as they improve to 16-12 overall and to 9-1 in SLC play. UT Arlington was led by freshman Amanda Aguilera (eight kills) while dropping to 5-19 overall and to 1-9 in league play.
Texas State opened the match with five kills and then used a UT Arlington hitting error to post a 6-0 lead which led to a Mavericks' timeout. After cutting the Bobcats' lead to three points, 11-14, on a kill from senior Ally Wade and a Texas State hitting error, the Bobcats finished the set on an 11-3 run.
Texas State took a commanding 2-0 lead into the intermission between the second and third sets after a dominating 25-10 second-set victory. UT Arlington closed the gap to four points (7-11) after sophomore Raegan Daniel's second kill of the set, but then Texas State rolled to the victory on a 14-4 scoring run.
After tallying a .241 hitting percentage in the first set, UT Arlington recorded only five kills with a -.160 hitting percentage (nine errors, 25 attacks) which led to the Bobcats' set victory. Texas State, meanwhile, was picking up momentum in the second frame with a .458 hitting percentage with only one error (12 kills) in 24 attacks.
Texas State finished the match with a 25-12 win in the third set. The Mavericks started the set with a 4-1 lead after freshman Tara Frantz recorded two kills, Daniel and freshman Christy Driscoll combined on a block assist and Daniel added a solo block. But the remainder of the set it was all Bobcats as they improved to 9-2 in home matches this season.
Frantz finished the match with five kills and freshman libero Alicia Shaffer led all players with 16 digs.
UT Arlington will play host to McNeese State on Friday, Oct. 31, for a 7 p.m. match at Texas Hall. Then the Mavericks will welcome Stephen F. Austin to Texas Hall on Saturday, Nov. 1, for a 4 p.m. first serve.
