MAVERICKS FALL 82-72 AT MARSHALL UNIVERSITY

Huntington, W.Va. - A 22 point effort by senior Candice Champion wasn't enough to stop Marshall University from recording an 82-72 victory on their home court on Tuesday, December 2 in Huntington, W.Va.

The Mavericks dropped their overall record to 2-4 while the Thundering Herd improved to 5-1 on the season.

A Nicole Terral dish inside to Candice Champion knotted the score at 2-2 at the 19:37 mark but a pair of made free throws by Tynikki Crook gave Marshall a 4-2 advantage. UT Arlington tied the game two more times before Marshall would go on a 9-0 run, giving the Herd a 17-8 lead with 13:42 left in the first stanza.

UTA struggled to find their stroke, falling by as many as 18 points following a Crook jumper at the 8:34 mark. A Kristina Grace layup with 10 seconds remaining in the first half sent the Mavericks into the locker rooms down 43-28.

The Mavs finished the first half shooting 36.7 percent (11-of-30) from the field to the Thundering Herd's 54.8 percent (17-of-31) from the floor.

Marshall opened up the second half on fire keeping distance between themselves and the Mavericks. UTA went on a 7-2 run sparked by back-to-back three's by LaTosha Duffey, cutting into the Herd's 59-48 lead.

The Mavericks came within 11 points one final time with 6:51 left on the clock after a Champion layup but the Thundering Herd continued to hit their shots, rolling to their fifth win of the season.

For the game, the Mavericks shot 41.1 percent from the field to the Herd's 54.4 percent from the floor. The Mavs were outrebounded by a 40-32 margin but won the battle in points off of turnovers, 18-16.

Champion went 6-of-10 from the field, 10-of-11 from the charity stripe while Shalyn Martin notched 16 points and Simmons added 11 points.

Crook recorded 22 points on 9-of-12 shooting from the field and 4-of-5 from the free throw line while Angelica Harris and Alyssa Hammond each chipped in with 12 points for the Herd.

The Mavericks will return back to Arlington, Texas for a short while before traveling to Houston, Texas for a match-up against Conference-USA foe-Rice University on Saturday, December 6 with game time set for 5:30 p.m.
