Balanced attack leads Mavs to win at Texas State

Jan. 30, 2010

Final Stats

San Marcos, Texas - Marquez Haynes scored 21 points, including 16 in the second half, to lead UT Arlington to an 82-78 victory over Texas State on Saturday.

UT Arlington (10-9, 2-4 Southland) opened an eight-point lead at 79-71 after Dwight Gentry made two free throws. But Texas State closed the game to within two at 80-78 with a 7-1 run with 9.2 seconds to play.

UTA's Tommy Moffitt was fouled on the in-bounds play with 6.3 seconds remaining and made both free throws for the final margin.

"This is a tough place to play and we knew we were going to have to fight and scrap today," UTA head coach Scott Cross said. "I'm really happy for the guys today. We really needed a win because I thought we are a better team that 1-4. I'm proud of we were able to pull this one out."

After a poor-shooting first half from the foul line in which the Mavericks made 11-of-19, they made 22-of-27 in the second half. They finished the game making season-highs of 33-of-46 (71.7%) for the game. The 46 free throw attempts tied for the eighth-highest total in school history.

"We needed that," Haynes said. "We knew if we were strong with the ball we would get the calls and that is what happened today."

UTA, which leads the Southland Conference in held Texas State to just 35% from the field while shooting 44.7%.

Haynes led a balanced UT Arlington attack as Gentry added 13 points and a career-high nine rebounds while Moffitt had 13. Brandon Long had 12.

"Lot of guys stepped up today and that is what we needed," Cross added. "Gentry was amazing today. He was the smallest guy on the court and he grabs nine rebounds."

Cameron Johnson led Texas State (10-11, 4-3) with 21 points and 11 rebounds.

UT Arlington next plays Wednesday, Feb. 3 when they host Texas A&M-Corpus Christi at Texas Hall. Tipoff is 7 p.m.
