ARLINGTON, Tex. - Alicia Shaffer and Amanda Aguilera turned in career-best performances, but they weren't enough to keep Sam Houston State from beating UT Arlington 3-2 Saturday night at Texas Hall.
Shaffer tallied a career-high 33 digs and Aguilera's 28 kills also marked a career high. However, the Bearkats found ways to win key points during their 20-25, 25-18, 25-20, 19-25, 15-11 win.
"I think they just played with more emotion than us the entire night," UTA coach Diane Seymour said. "I don't think it was something that they did. I think they just decided they wanted to win a little bit more than we did and turned it on."
The Mavericks made a furious comeback attempt after falling behind 13-3 in the final set, but were unable to overtake the Bearkats (10-13, 4-4). The loss dropped UTA to 1-3 on its homestand.
Aguilera's match marked the ninth consecutive time she has posted 10-plus kills and her 10 digs gave her a fifth straight double-double. She entered the fifth set hitting over .400, but fell to .258 for the match after struggling in the fifth.
With Aguilera playing well and Tara Frantz also having a strong day, the UTA outside hitters nearly elevated the Mavericks to a win. Frantz finished with 16 kills and a .286 hitting percentage. It marked her seventh consecutive match with a double-digit kill total.
Shaffer topped the 22-dig mark for the seventh time in nine matches.
Raegan Daniel earned her eighth double-double of the season, posting 43 assists and 12 digs. It also marked the sixth time this season Daniel totaled 40-plus assists in a match this season.
Emily Shearin had six blocks, Christy Driscoll had five kills and Kendall Whitson posted a career-high 16 digs in the loss.
Bianca Sauls struggled on the attack, but managed three aces, four blocks and eight digs.
Carli Kolbe led the Bearkats with 15 kills and Kaylee Hawkins had 33 digs.
The Mavericks fell to 9-13 overall and 3-5 in conference during the program's annual Alumni Weekend. Approximately 50 former players were in attendance, including three of the eight members of the UT Arlington All-Decade Team. That team was honored between Games 2 and 3.
The Mavericks now return to the road, starting a four-match trip with a Wednesday night match at Texas State.
Seymour said the team needs to regain its confidence on the trip.
"I think the biggest things blocking these players right now are themselves," she said. "We have a couple players turning in career-bests and it just wasn't enough."
