ARLINGTON, Tex. - Alicia Shaffer earned 68 digs in nine sets last week (7.56 per set) and led UT Arlington to road wins over Stephen F. Austin and Sam Houston State in a pivotal weekend. For her efforts, the Southland Conference recognized Shaffer as the SLC Defensive Player of the Week.
During a five-set win over the Ladyjacks, Shaffer tallied a career-high 43 digs. That total marked the most digs any player has produced in an SLC match this season. Behind Shaffer's defense, the Mavericks halted their 10-match losing streak to Stephen F. Austin and won in Nacogdoches for the first time since 2000.
Shaffer managed 25 digs Saturday at Sam Houston State, helping UTA to a four-set victory.
Thanks in part to Shaffer, the Mavs have jumped from last to tied for third in the SLC West with just four matches remaining.
Shaffer became the first player this season to win a weekly award from the conference.
