TULSA, Okla. - Shalyn Martin became the 18th player in UT Arlington history to reach the 1,000-point plateau, but Oral Roberts ruined the Mavs' season opener with a 110-58 win at the Mabee Center.
UTA kept the game close early, trailing just 24-20 midway in the first half, but the team's inexperience showed in the form of 35 turnovers.
"They just put a lot of pressure on our young players," UTA coach Sam Morrow said. "We didn't handle that well. They trapped the ball well in the half-court and we didn't move the ball the way we wanted to.'
While the Mavericks struggled with turnovers, the Golden Eagles (1-0) hit 56 percent of their 3-point attempts. Kevi Luper led the team with 28 points and five steals.
Oral Roberts finished the first half on a 33-7 run.
"When things didn't go well early, we kind of abandoned our offense," Morrow said. "It was like everything we've taught them and seen them do, they didn't do today. I think it's just the inexperience and the fact that we're so young because it was little things that added up and we didn't do very well. Hopefully we learn something from it because we've got to move on."
Martin led the team with 14 points, nine rebounds, two blocks and two steals.
Tamara Simmons tallied 13 points for the Mavs. Jasmine Smith finished with nine points on 4-of-6 shooting, but was limited after picking up two fouls in the first 1:04.
"Jasmine got into foul trouble really early and we had to go to our bench in that spot," Morrow said. "I don't know that we're prepared to do that yet."
The Mavericks (0-1) play again Sunday at Houston at 5 p.m. Their home-opener is set for Nov. 24 against Arkansas State.
