Final Stats
Las Vegas, NV - UT Arlington fell to 3-7 overall after an 81-56 setback against California (7-2) in day one of the Las Vegas Holiday Hoops Classic at the South Point Arena.
Tamara Simmons led the Mavericks with 17 points on 6-of-14 shooting from the field, 3-of-8 from behind the arc and 2-of-4 from the free throw line. Simmons was the lone Maverick to score in double-figures.
California opened with a 5-0 advantage following three straight turnovers by the Mavericks. Sabreena DeNure put UTA on the board at the 16:54 mark with a 3-pointer, cutting into the Golden Bears lead.
The Mavericks continued to struggle, committing turnovers which led to a 15 point advantage by California with 1:56 left in the first stanza. A jumper just before the buzzer by Shalyn Martin cut the deficit 40-27 heading into the break.
Although, the Mavericks outrebounded the Golden Bear's in the first half, Cal registered half of their points in the paint and 16 off of UTA's 17 turnovers.
UTA finished the half shooting 45 (9-of-20) percent from the field to Cal's 53.3 (16-of-30) percent.
UT Arlington was playing catch up the entire second half against Cal. The Mavs couldn't get passed the Golden Bear's hard nose defense and big bodies in the paint. California registered 17 steals, 40 points in the paint and outrebounded the Mavs 39-24.
The Mavs finished the game shooting 37 percent (17-of-46) from the floor, 44.4 percent (8-of-18) from 3-point range, and 77.8 percent (14-of-18) from the line.
Sophomore Kiara Parker made her first appearance at the 2:42 mark after missing the Mavericks first nine games. Parker played three minutes in the loss.
UT Arlington takes on Pittsburgh tomorrow at 12 p.m. in the final game of the Las Vegas Holiday Classic. Texas Tech and California are set to follow at 2:15.
Game Notes (Pittsburgh vs. UT Arlington)
- Pittsburgh (5-5) dropped a 78-65 decision to Texas Tech (10-1) in the first game of the classic.
- Pittsburgh's offense was led by Jania Sims, who registered a game high 26 points while Taneisha Harrison poured in 17. Sims leads the team averaging 14.3 points per game,
- The Panthers finished the game shooting 40.4 (23-of-57) percent from the field to Texas Tech's 46.2 (30-of-65). Tech recorded 42 points in the paint and outrebounded Pitt by a 41-30 margin.
- The meeting against the Panthers is the second in the programs history... Pitt owns a 1-0 series lead over the Mavericks... the last meeting was on November 26, 1994 in Las Vegas, NV where UTA dropped a 64-74 decision.
