Las Vegas, NV - UT Arlington dropped a 95-61 decision in the final day of the Las Vegas Holiday Classic against Pittsburgh at the South Point Arena. The Mavericks fell to 3-8 on the season while the Panthers improved to 6-5.
Senior Tamara Simmons was named to the all-tournament team after averaging 16 points per game. Against California, Simmons recorded a team high 17 points on 6-of-14 shooting from the field, 3-of-8 from 3-point range and 2-of-4 from the line. Simmons followed that performance with 15 points against Pitt.
Junior transfer Jasmine Smith was close to earning a spot on the all-tournament team after finishing with 16 points and 14 rebounds. The 16 points is a season-high for Smith and was her first double-double of the season. Smith recorded eight points and eight boards in game one versus California.
After tying the game at 7-7, Pittsburgh went on a 15-5 run to go ahead 22-14. The Mavericks struggled to find their shots as Pitt rolled to a 22 point advantage heading into the break (51-29).
The Panthers dominated the paint, scoring 20 points and out-rebounded UTA by a 26-13 margin in the first half.
UTA finished the half shooting just 23.1 (6-of-26) percent from the floor to the Panthers 58.1 (18-of-31) percent.
The Mavs offensive woes continued in the second half as a bigger Pittsburgh team dominated the game.
UT Arlington finished the game shooting 27.6 percent (16-of-58) from the field to Pitt's 59 percent.
Pittsburgh recorded 40 points in the paint and the bench chipped in with 46.
Seven Panthers finished in double-figures with Asia Logan leading the way with 13. Chelsea Cole registered a double-double with 11 points and 11 rebounds.
Prior to the start of conference on January 8, the Mavericks will play their final non-conference game at Kansas on Thursday, December 30. Game time is set for 7 p.m.
Kansas improved to 10-1 on the year after registering a 91-52 win at home against SIU-Edwardsville on December 19.
